HbbTV 2.0 standard officially released to support HTML5 and Ultra HD


Previously, there was news in IBC 2014 that the HbbTV2.0 version of the standard specification will be officially released at the end of 2014. This release was later than expected.

The HbbTV Alliance hopes that relevant equipment manufacturers, broadcasters and operators will launch a new generation of interactive TV and broadband TV services starting in 2016.

The HbbTV Alliance stated that HbbTV2.0 users will be able to enjoy a range of new services, including an HTML5-based user experience, seamless viewing across TVs, smartphones, PCs, and tablets, and an innovative second-screen enhanced TV experience application (including details Program information, voting, play on large screens, and other user-customized applications), support HEVC Ultra HD content distribution, better multilingual caption support for convenient viewing, access to broadcast content received by the receiver in local storage, and support for user privacy protection.

In addition, broadcasters, OTT operators, and OTT video providers can benefit from broadcast and broadband synchronization streams, and can add additional audio channels or other advanced features to the broadcast stream; various devices such as televisions, tablets, smart TVs Synchronization between media and applications; secure playback with adaptive streaming and support for new broadcast modes.

The HbbTV Alliance stated that in order to accomplish these goals, the new standard added new technologies and features, such as support for HTML5, DVBCIPlus1.4, HEVC video, and TTML subtitles. The standard also enhances existing technologies such as MPEGDASH, DSM-CC object carousel, synchronization of TV applications and user input, and so on.

In addition, the design of the new standard ensures that HbbTV1.0 and HbbTV1.5 applications can continue to be used on HbbTV2.0 devices.

The HbbTV Alliance will also begin its promotion process immediately. In April or May of this year, an HbbTV2.0 test kit will be provided to enable HbbTV2.0 compliant products and services to be launched in 2016.

HbbTV has been launched in a number of European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, and the Benelux Economic Union. Russia, Portugal, and other countries are experimenting with broadband hybrid TV. The United States and Brazil are very interested in broadband hybrid TV. China has also conducted several trials on broadband hybrid TV. In 2014, Australia launched a broadband hybrid TV service. More than 90% of the broadcast market in Germany supports broadband hybrid TV. More than 70 live applications have been released. In 2013, 90% of German smart TVs received mixed broadcast broadband TV services. Broadband hybrid TV devices have already been sold. There are 5.5 million units and the networking rate is as high as 70%.

Some commentators pointed out that HbbTV is enhancing its traditional TV broadcasting service with interactive services and is expected to achieve a sustained increase in market share after the release of its latest version 2.0 HbbTV2.0. The Italian Federation of Broadcasting Industries, Televisioni, has previously issued a statement, announcing that after the release of the HbbTV 2.0 specification, broadcasters throughout Italy will convert from the DVB-MHP standard to the HTML-5-based HbbTV2.0 standard.
