Apple applied for ceramic laser polishing patented iPhone ceramic chassis with spectrum

Apple, which attaches great importance to product technology innovation, will be the first to introduce a new iPhone with a ceramic chassis after the first launch of the metal case iPhone.

Although Apple's product launch conference in September 2016 has already launched the new collector's edition Apple Watch with a ceramic material case, the material chassis has not yet appeared in the iPhone product. However, according to the recently published Apple Patent Application document "Laser Polishing Ceramic Material" by the USPTO, perhaps the new iPhone with a ceramic case will soon appear.

Apple stated in the application that the surface of ceramic components made of sapphire, zirconia or other similar materials is manufactured in large quantities due to its hardness up to 9.0 Mohs scale of mineral hardness. In this case, it is both difficult and time consuming to smooth the rough surface, especially if the assembly is a non-planar surface with undulating contours or curved features.

Therefore, the company's newly invented laser polishing system will use mechanical or chemical methods to process the planar area polishing of ceramic material components and process the non-planar areas adjacent to the planar area with laser beams. In this way, not only can the roughness of the surface of the component be reduced, but also the integrity of the entire component structure can be maintained. In addition, the components can be preheated before the laser polishing process, thereby avoiding excessive temperature differences due to laser irradiation.

It is reported that the patent for the laser polishing system was introduced on July 29, 2015, at a time when the company failed to produce sapphire glass in cooperation with GT Advanced Technologies.

It is unclear whether Apple's previous ceramic material, the new collector's edition Apple Watch, is polished using this system. However, from the schematic diagram of Apple's patent application documents, the company does intend to use this patent in the production of iPhone cases. However, it is still unclear whether Apple's next-generation iPhone will be launched in September 2017.
