Easy-to-use DC/DC solutions for cost-sensitive applications

Have you recently upgraded your TV to a TV with a larger screen and Ultra HD resolution? Have you installed a new set-top box for six-channel simultaneous digital video recording? Does your modem support 200Mbps Wi-Fi speed? Can you control your home's air conditioner or car ignition with your smartphone?

Technology does develop very fast, and continuous innovation behind the scenes to achieve better performance, new features and more stylish design is the basis for the development of next-generation consumer devices.

For example, I was amazed at the next generation of digital TV and wondered how major brands continue to release models with higher image resolution, more stylish designs and larger screen sizes. These brands are now talking about achieving 8K HD by 2020. In addition, leading manufacturers have significantly cut pricing over the past 10 years and have improved functionality and performance compared to previous models.

The same is true for DC/DC power solutions for consumer electronics. There are technical and innovative needs. DC/DC solutions such as the TPS562201, TPS563201, and TPS564201 are smaller and simpler, but are more efficient at reducing power consumption and meeting market demands.

Better efficiency

With the latest advances in packaging technology called flip-chip on flip-chip (FCOL), TI can now manufacture DC/DC converters with no wire bonding. The chip is directly connected to the lead frame by copper bumps, which reduces the on-resistance (Rdson) of the MOSFET, resulting in higher efficiency and lower power consumption.

While wire bonding for conventional packages typically requires more space due to the height and length of the leads, for FCOL, the copper bumps are located underneath the chip and do not require additional space, thus allowing for a smaller overall package size. See Figure 1 and Figure 2. The TPS56x201 series uses FCOL packaging technology.

For better light-load operation, the TPS56x201 series DC/DC solutions also feature low standby quiescent current (Iq) and TI's advanced Eco-modeTM for light load efficiency, making it easier for designers to meet Low-power standby requirements for regulators such as Energy Star and Energy-Using Products (EuP) directives. For example, a device that converts 12V to 5V at 40mA can support 90% efficiency. See Figure 2 for the 3ATPS563201 and 4A TPS564201 efficiency curves.

Smaller PCB size

Early TPS54326 devices were popular in consumer applications. The device is available in a simple small outline integrated circuit (SOIC) 8-pin package and uses TI's DCAP2TM control scheme to provide fast transient response without the need for an external phase compensation device.

As a next-generation solution, the TPS563201 is available in a smaller, small form factor transistor (SOT) 23 six-pin package, which is one-third smaller than previous solutions. The new solution also requires fewer external components and a fixed 1ms soft-start time, eliminating the need for additional capacitors for soft-start time adjustment (see Figure 3). You do not need a voltage regulator capacitor for internal low dropout regulator (LDO) operation.

Easy to design

In addition to the low external component count, very good efficiency and very fast load transient response, the TPS56x201 family of devices (see Table 1) is also easy to use on different sockets that require a DC/DC buck converter on the board. This flexibility is due to pin-to-pin compatibility between all devices and the ability to easily switch devices on the board with minimal changes, even if the load current requirements change to 4A. The TPS56x201 series also offers very good light load efficiency and advanced Eco-modeTM functionality to support power regulation in standby mode. If this is not required and you want to operate at a constant switching frequency under light load, the TPS56x208 series can also meet this need. See Table 1 below.

Other cost sensitive applications

Because the new device supports simple, cost-effective, and small solutions in consumer applications, the TPS56x201 can also be used in Bluetooth® speakers, multifunction printers, gaming consoles, enterprise computing, and drones. The TPS56x201 and TPS56x208 provide a simple and efficient solution for 5V, 12V and 15V VIN bus voltage rails up to 4A. Due to the high proportion of these solutions used in DTV and other consumer applications such as set-top boxes and modems, these solutions will provide a lot of end-equipment applications where efficiency, ease of use, small size and overall system cost are key factors. value.
