Building a global energy Internet is entering a new phase

Since China launched the "Global Energy Internet" initiative in 2015, significant progress has been made in the development of this ambitious global energy network. Over 140 countries have introduced their own energy development policies, reflecting a growing international consensus on the importance of sustainable energy solutions. The "Global Energy Internet China Initiative" aims to drive sustainable human development by promoting cross-border grid interconnection and clean energy integration. This vision has become a shared goal among nations, marking a shift toward collaborative energy strategies. At the 2017 Global Energy Internet High-Level Forum, it was revealed that after years of effort, several neighboring countries such as Russia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar have achieved power interconnection, with an interconnected capacity of around 260 million kilowatts. The construction of oil and gas channels across three continents—northwest, northeast, and southwest—signals that the global energy internet is entering a new phase of joint action. The "Friendship Circle" of the initiative continues to expand. Facing global challenges like resource depletion, environmental pollution, and climate change, China proposed the "Exploration to Build a Global Energy Internet" initiative on September 26, 2015. In March 2016, the Global Energy Internet Development Cooperation Organization was established, becoming the first international energy organization initiated by China. Over the past two years, the global energy internet has seen major advancements. More than 100 in-depth research projects have been conducted, leading to the creation of a comprehensive planning system. These include assessments of global wind and solar resources, the first global backbone network wiring diagram, and the release of a global energy internet white paper. Such efforts represent important theoretical and practical breakthroughs. International cooperation has also accelerated. China has built strong relationships with over 150 governments, enterprises, and institutions across 47 countries. Agreements have been signed with organizations like the African Union and the International Hydropower Association, covering areas such as grid interconnection, clean energy development, and smart grid technology. This has led to a more diversified and high-level international cooperation framework. Cooperative organizations have grown rapidly, with over 300 members from more than 40 countries. A global network system is being formed, and institutional development has strengthened. Research institutes, advisory committees, and technical academic bodies have been established, enhancing cross-sector collaboration and research capabilities. From a resource perspective, the potential for global hydropower, onshore wind, and solar energy far exceeds current needs. UHV (Ultra High Voltage) transmission technology is mature, and clean energy generation and smart grid technologies are widely adopted. Economically, the cost of wind and solar power has dropped significantly, making them increasingly competitive against fossil fuels. China’s energy internet has already become a key demonstration for the global project. With over 35,000 kilometers of UHV lines and a substation capacity of 360 million kVA, it plays a vital role in national energy transmission and environmental protection. China leads globally in smart grid development and clean energy installation. Despite these achievements, challenges remain. Some regions lack awareness of the need for energy transformation, especially in underdeveloped areas like Africa and Southeast Asia. Technological innovation is still needed in areas like energy efficiency, smart grid integration, and equipment manufacturing. The success of the global energy internet requires not only technological and economic progress but also complex international cooperation. Strong policy support, legal frameworks, and political will are essential. China plans to continue building its domestic energy internet, optimizing the grid layout, and accelerating the development of demonstration projects. By focusing on Belt and Road Initiative countries, China aims to implement clean energy and grid interconnection projects with clear benefits. It will also strengthen regional cooperation and improve strategic transportation corridors. The future of the global energy internet looks promising, driven by innovation, collaboration, and a shared vision for a sustainable world.
