Symantec Introduces First Hardware Product

Symantec will begin shipping this hardware product, called NetBackup 5000, this month, using industry-standard servers, pre-installed with Symantec's target-based data deduplication software and integrated with Symantec. g NetBackup data protection software.

Brian Dye, vice president of product management at Symantec Information Management, said: "The company has always said it does not want to be a hardware vendor, but customers are constantly asking for the need for us to provide such a product."

Dye said that pre-installation of deduplication software in hardware can reduce the deployment of deduplication technology to less than 20 minutes, which not only makes it easier for solution providers to deploy deduplication technology, but also facilitates sales.

Dye also said that Symantec will launch some NetBackup-related hardware products in the future, but the company does not intend to sell Backup Express software in hardware. He said that the latter will be sold by other partners in pre-installed hardware.

Randy Cochran, vice president of channel sales for Symantec North America, said: “Symantec does not intend to enter the hardware market, but we will provide customers with more choices in this way.”

In addition, Symantec also added NetBackup software to its Nirvanix storage cloud, upgraded its Enterprise Vault archiving software, and integrated eDiscovery into archiving programs.
