Texas Instruments Introduces High-Performance IP Camera and DVR Reference Design

Texas Instruments (TI) today announced two new creative reference designs that provide a complete hardware and software solution for application development, helping customers focus on differentiated video security solution designs and accelerate time-to-market. Video security application developers can now save 90% of the development time to create highly differentiated video surveillance products, giving customers a sense of security and protection. The DVR reference design supports analog cameras and can be used as a hybrid DVR, allowing multiple analog and IP camera configurations to be integrated for maximum reuse and avoiding the need to replace existing infrastructure with high cost. With more than 32 real-time D1 channels and H.264 advanced specification video processing, the DVR achieves a H.264 compression ratio that is 2.6 times higher than other equivalent quality DVRs in the market. Video traffic and data storage are optimized to achieve the same high visual quality for all stored video while using less disk space. For example, customers can replace a 1 TB disk drive with a 350 GB disk drive and still achieve the same high quality for all stored video. The latest DVR reference design builds on the TI TMS320DM8168 DaVinci digital media processor running at speeds up to 1 GHz. The DM8168 DaVinci digital media processor includes a fixed-point and floating-point digital signal processor (DSP) that provides multi-channel analysis for continuous monitoring of video inputs to automatically respond when an event is detected. The reference design features a network feature that supports remote access and provides high quality video for three separate displays, including HDMI output.

The intelligent IP camera reference design delivers tens of millions of pixels at lower frame rates and lower power consumption, supporting small products such as mini hemispheres. Multi-megapixel resolution reduces the number of cameras required to monitor large areas, such as casinos, parking lots, and retail stores. IP cameras are ideal for dimly lit and high-definition video surveillance in detailed detail applications, including license plate numbers and face recognition. In addition, the DM812x DaVinci digital media processor provides video intelligence through the DSP to provide targeted intelligence to the camera. This intelligence supports applications that only record, transmit, and store the necessary video sequences, increasing the efficiency of the video security system without the need for manual 24/7 monitoring.
