Royal Philips Electronics (Philips) introduced the PNX1700, the latest addition to its NexperiaTM line of HD media processors. It integrates media processing, network connectivity and display enhancements on a single chip and is designed to deliver unprecedented quality for streaming movies, news, digital photos and TV shows. The performance of the PNX1700 is twice that of previous generations, while ensuring software and hardware compatibility. Digitally connected home devices using the PNX1700 include IP set-top boxes, digital media adapters, personal video recorders, video phones and televisions.
The PNX1700 features a new 500MHz+ ultra-capacity TriMediaTM CPU core. The core combines high performance and compatibility and has been awarded the title of Best Media Processor by the Microprocessor Forum. It supports HD video format decoding such as Windows Media Video, DivX, MPEG-4 and MPEG-2. In addition, the PNX1700 encodes and decodes all D1 resolution MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video simultaneously, making it ideal for personal video recording applications. The PNX1700 also includes instructions to optimize H.264 video encoding/decoding, and its advanced deinterlacing feature supports standard resolution (SD) to HD up-conversion.
The PNX1700 is supported by a complete development kit that includes a hardware reference design, a C compiler, a debugger, multiple software codecs, and application software. Samples will be delivered to specific customers in June 2005 and volume production will be achieved in the third quarter.
