Today’s increasingly sensitive ESD environments and the rise of high-compact, ultra-mobile devices have made cost-effective circuit protection a crucial part of the design process. At the Shanghai Electronics Show in Munich, TE Connectivity's TE Circuit Protection showcased a comprehensive range of solutions designed to protect electronic circuits from electrostatic discharge (ESD), overcurrent, overvoltage, and thermal threats—especially under abnormal operating conditions or thermal runaway scenarios. The company was present at booth 3402 in Hall W3 from March 18th to 20th.

Dai Zhenxiang, Director of Sales for Asia Pacific at TE Circuit Protection, emphasized: “We’re seeing strong trends across consumer electronics, automotive, and medical applications. As more complex topologies are squeezed into smaller form factors, it’s essential to rethink circuit protection. This is the challenge our team has taken on. What we presented at the show reflects our leadership in delivering advanced circuit integrity and protection solutions.”

A key highlight at the event was the new Silicon ESD (SESD) device family. While traditional ESD protection according to IEC61000-4-2 may not be sufficient to prevent serious damage from charged board events (CBEs), the SESD series offers enhanced performance. With ±20kV and ±22kV air discharge ratings, these devices exceed IEC standards by a significant margin, providing robust protection against powerful surges that can damage I/O ports in smartphones, tablets, and car infotainment systems.

The SESD devices also feature extremely low leakage currents (50nA), helping to reduce power consumption in energy-sensitive applications. This makes them ideal for ultra-mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, which are driving growth in the global electronics market, especially in China.

TE Circuit Protection also demonstrated its MHP-TA series of ultra-low side, resettable thermal cut-off (TCO) devices designed for Li-Ion battery protection. These devices combine advanced thermal activation features with cost-effective and space-saving designs, making them perfect for today’s ultra-slim consumer electronics. Based on TE’s Metal Hybrid PPTC (MHP) technology, the MHP-TA series integrates a PPTC device and a bimetal circuit breaker in parallel, offering reliable current interruption when high temperatures are detected.

The compact MHP-TA device is ideal for protecting lithium polymer (LiP) and cylindrical batteries in tablets, ultra-thin notebooks, and smartphones. Its efficient TCO solution provides design flexibility with multiple activation temperature options and two current ratings.

The demand for ultra-mobile devices continues to drive growth in the Chinese electronics industry. According to Gartner, media tablet shipments in China are expected to reach 57 million units in 2016, nearly matching the 58 million units of mobile PCs. Beyond consumer use, media tablets are also gaining traction in vertical markets such as hospitality, insurance, finance, retail, transportation, and education.

Dai Zhenxiang concluded: “TE Circuit Protection believes our products offer greater efficiency and versatility than similar offerings on the market. We remain competitive through continuous innovation, rigorous testing, and quality control. By working closely with our customers, we aim to understand their needs and deliver tailored solutions that meet their requirements.”
