The rapid growth of the domestic automotive electronics market will account for 9.8% of global electronic system sales in 2021.

According to the 2018 edition of the IC Insights data report, the sales of automotive electronic systems are projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.4% from 2016 to 2021, making it the fastest-growing segment among the six major end-user systems. This upward trend reflects the rising demand for advanced vehicle technologies such as autonomous driving, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, along with enhanced safety, convenience, and environmental features. As more consumers become interested in electric and smart vehicles, the integration of these technologies into mid-range and entry-level models is accelerating. Additionally, the growing availability of aftermarket products is further boosting the adoption of automotive electronics. For semiconductor suppliers, this represents a significant opportunity, as many of these systems rely heavily on analog ICs, microcontrollers (MCUs), and various sensors. Figure 2 highlights that the global electronic systems market was valued at $1.49 trillion in 2017, with the automotive sector accounting for 9.1% of the total. This share has been steadily increasing, surpassing 8.9% in 2015 and 9.0% in 2016. By 2021, it’s expected to reach 9.8%, showing a slight but consistent rise. Despite the addition of more electronic systems in new vehicles, IC Insights notes that the automotive segment will still represent a larger portion of the overall market due to ongoing price pressures in ICs and electronic components. In terms of other markets, the automotive IC sector is set to be the fastest-growing. In 2017, it grew by 22%, followed by 16% in 2018. Meanwhile, the industrial electronic system market is expected to grow at 4.6% by 2021, driven by advancements in robotics, wearable health devices, and IoT-enabled systems. Analog ICs are expected to make up 45% of the industrial IC market in 2017. As smartphone sales plateau globally, the communications systems market is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 4.2% between 2016 and 2021. The Asia-Pacific region is anticipated to lead in this space, capturing 69% of the total communications IC market in 2017. The consumer electronics market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.8% by 2021. Logic chips will dominate the consumer IC market during this period. Overall, the consumer IC market is projected to expand at a 2.4% CAGR from 2016 to 2021. On the other hand, the personal computing market—covering desktops, laptops, and tablets—is expected to see the slowest growth, with the computer systems market reaching its lowest point before 2021. However, in 2017, the computer IC market is projected to increase by 25% due to higher average prices for DRAM and NAND flash memory.
