TI's industry's first multi-standard wireless microcontroller platform enables battery-free IoT connectivity

Beijing, March 11, 2015. Texas Instruments (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN) today announced the launch of its new SimpleLinkTM ultra-low-power wireless microcontroller (MCU) platform that enables users to use battery-free operation with energy harvesting or through button cells The power supply is continuously operated for several years. With this industry-first technology, users can flexibly develop products that support multiple wireless connectivity standards through a single chip and identical RF design. The SimpleLink ultra-low power platform supports Bluetooth® low energy, ZigBee®, 6LoWPAN, Sub-1 GHz, ZigBee RF4CETM and all modes up to 5Mbps. The new platform extends TI's SimpleLink portfolio to provide the industry's broadest, lowest power, and easiest to use wireless connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT). For more information, please visit www.TI.com/simplelinkulp.

To expand TI's leadership in low-power MCUs, SimpleLink's ultra-low-power platform offers the highest level of integration with ARM® Cortex®-M3 MCUs, flash/RAM, analog-to-digital converters, peripherals, and on-chip. Sensor controller and built-in strong security. The platform also enables the simplest design with a ready-to-use protocol stack, TI RTOS, Code Composer StudioTM integrated development environment (IDE), development tools, online training and E2ETM community support. By providing a reference design, users can simplify development and layout with minimal RF knowledge. In addition, TI also helps users connect to the cloud more easily through the IoT cloud ecosystem.

The first members of the SimpleLink ultra-low-power wireless MCU platform are the CC2640 for Bluetooth Smart and the CC2630 for 6LoWPAN and ZigBee. For even more flexibility, users can also use CC2650 wireless MCUs that support multiple 2.4GHz technologies such as Bluetooth Smart, 6LoWPAN, Zigbee and RF4CE. By leveraging multi-standard support, users can keep their designs up to date, and they can also configure the technology of choice when they are installed in the field. In addition, CC1310 for Sub-1 GHz and CC2620 for ZigBee RF4CE will be available in 2015.

Designed for ultra low power applications

Designed for low-power operation, the new ultra-low-power platform includes a unique integrated sensor controller that automatically connects to external sensors while the rest of the device is asleep. In addition, the platform's RF peak current is less than 6.2mA, and the current is less than 61uA/MHz when the MCU is activated. The entire chip can be held in standby with a current of 1.1uA while supporting memory hold and RTC (real time clock) operation in this state. According to the ULPBenchTM promulgated by the Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Association (EEMBC), the platform has won 143.6 points and its power consumption is only half that of other MCUs. Stay tuned to our blog for more on battery-free operation.
