Wal-Mart begins testing drone delivery technology

Beijing morning news on October 27, Wal-Mart plans to launch drone express testing. This also means that Wal-Mart will become a rival of Amazon and Google. On Monday, Wal-Mart filed an application with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct drone tests outdoors. The company’s ultimate goal is to use drones to deliver packages to customers. Wal-Mart said in the application document: "Walmart's logistics system will be more efficient, and customers will get better service, which is in the public interest."

Wal-Mart also plans to use drones to track cargo conditions, such as tracking the inventory of trailers outside the logistics center. A spokesperson for the company said Wal-Mart will decide after further tests whether and when drones will be part of the daily business operations.

The FAA has issued more than 2,000 authorizations to enterprises so that these companies can use drones for aerial photography, monitoring and inspection purposes. So far, the FAA's approval has been limited to flying at low altitudes. Such drone flights must be within reach of the operator and away from the surrounding population. Under such circumstances, it is impossible to use a drone to deliver express delivery.

Amazon and Google have already begun testing the idea of using small drones to transport small packages. However, both companies have stated that this vision has a long way to go before it becomes a reality. The FAA is in the process of finalizing regulatory requirements to promote the wider commercial use of UAVs. However, for long-haul, automated flights required for express delivery, FAA also needs to design new management regulations.

In the logistics system, Wal-Mart is trying to catch up with Amazon. Wal-Mart has built a new logistics center network to shorten delivery time and test order delivery services like Amazon Gold Services. On the other hand, Wal-Mart is also developing services within the store, that is, users place orders online, and then in the local Wal-Mart store.
