Will 4K×2K TVs bring new demands to the LED industry?

As the development of high-definition TVs has become more and more fierce, the demand for LED chips and accessories has also increased. High-definition TVs are the most popular in China. For example, 4K×2K TV has become a hot spot in the Chinese TV market. To this end, some panel makers such as Innolux and China Star have developed 4K x 2K panels, while some TV brands such as Skyworth and Haier are developing high-end, high-resolution TVs. In this case, both panel manufacturers and TV manufacturers are demanding a reduction in backlight thickness, but backlight module manufacturers have to weigh the cost and thickness.

Due to the poor transmittance of 4K x 2K panels, backlight module designers must use larger or brighter LED chips to achieve panel brightness specifications. According to the quarterly research report of NPD Displaysearch's latest LED backlight, the Quarterly LED Backlight Report points out that 99% of 4K x 2K panels are now side-in backlight modules, and this will continue until 2017.

However, in 2013, direct-lit backlight modules became more and more popular. Because the direct type backlight module uses a high current, overclocked LED chip to achieve higher brightness, the cost is the same as that of the side-in type backlight module. So, if the brightness of the TV backlight is the same, can 4K×2K TV really bring new demands to the LED industry?

As shown in the figure below, the demand for LED chips for ordinary TVs in 2013 accounted for 59.6% of their total demand. As more and more TV manufacturers use direct-lit backlight modules, the demand for ordinary TVs in LED display applications will fall to 53.8% in 2017. However, demand for 4K x 2K TVs will increase from 0.3% in 2014 to 22.7% in 2017. As a result, demand for LED chips will increase from 1.252 billion in 2013 to 5.738 billion in 2017.

In order to maintain the same brightness as a normal panel, the high-resolution panel must have 1.2 to 1.3 times the number of LED chips. However, due to the bright spot problem, the side-in type backlight module cannot reduce the number of LED chips as the direct-type backlight module. Therefore, in order to improve the brightness, the side-in type backlight module will change the long side to the short side, but will not use the overload current drive.

Chinese LCD TV panel makers (especially 4K×2K panel makers) are changing the Chinese panel market by increasing production capacity and production. China is the world's largest and fastest growing television market. 4K×2K products are popular in the Chinese market, and Chinese TV manufacturers promote 4K×2K TVs as their main products. Therefore, the TV backlight must be as thin as possible, and the side-in backlight is the most popular backlight design in 4K x 2K TVs. At present, more and more LED manufacturers are targeting the Chinese market, and all new technologies are appearing in the Chinese market, such as BMS (Backlight Module System) business model, 3D, 4K × 2K and high color gamut that may appear in the future. .

As the demand for 4K×2K TV continues to grow, there will still be room for development in the LED backlight market. NPD Displaysearch predicts that 4K×2K TV sales will increase in the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year, which will help to consume the over-produced LED chips in the fourth quarter of 2013, but will also intensify the price war between LED manufacturers.
