The output shaft of the clutch is the input shaft of the gearbox. During the driving of the car, the driver can step on or release the clutch pedal as needed to temporarily disengage and gradually engage the engine and the transmission to cut off or transfer the power input from the engine to the transmission.

When the driver depresses the clutch pedal, the large end of the diaphragm spring drives the pressure plate to move backward through the transmission of the mechanical parts. At this time, the driven part is separated from the active part. The friction clutch should be able to meet the following basic requirements: (1) Ensure that the maximum torque transmitted by the engine can be transmitted, and that there is a certain torque residual force. (2) When it can be separated, it can be completely separated, soft when it is joined, and has good heat dissipation ability. (3) The inertia of the driven part should be as small as possible. In this way, when the clutch is shifted, the rotation speed of the part connected to the input shaft of the transmission is relatively easy to change, thereby reducing the impact between the gears. (4) It has the ability to mitigate the impact in the direction of rotation and attenuate the vibration in this direction, and the noise is small. (5) The pressure plate pressure and the friction coefficient of the friction plate change little, and the work is stable. (6) Easy operation and convenient maintenance.

The flywheel of the engine is the active part of the clutch. The driven disc and hub with friction plates are connected to the driven shaft (that is, the input shaft of the transmission) by splines.
