As consumers demand HDTVs with larger flat panel displays and higher resolutions, the demand for TVs has rapidly shifted from plasma HDTVs to LED HDTVs. From motion blur to color reproduction, current LCD HDTVs have various drawbacks. The current generation of LCD HDTVs does not achieve true black, and the dynamic range of all colors is small. Normal HDTVs are backlit with CCFL tubes and have a contrast ratio of only 450 to 650 cd/m2. The main problem with these HDTVs is that CCFL backlighting cannot be completely turned off or local dimming is not possible.

Conversely, with high-brightness LED backlighting, the LED array (which can contain up to 1600 LEDs for a 46-inch display) can dim or partially turn off the backlight “group”, which is almost higher than the CCFL design. An order of magnitude contrast (> 4000cd/m2). In addition, by adjusting the brightness of the backlighting LED group, more midtones can be reproduced, making the picture more vivid. Another benefit is the ability to completely turn off the LEDs from the local area, thereby reducing motion blur. In addressing the fast motion blur problems faced by such CCFL backlight LCD TVs, the very fast response speed of LEDs is critical.

The dilemma of the designer

Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs) are often used to backlight large flat panel displays, but their chromatograms are limited and the colors are not sufficiently sharp. The RGB LED actually extends the visible range. In addition, CCFL can display approximately 80% of the colors defined by the National Television System Committee (NTSC), while RGB can display up to 110% of NTSC chromatograms, showing more accurate image representations on the display. On the other hand, white LED backlighting is ideal for handheld and mobile displays because white LEDs are small in size, easy to drive, less sensitive to mechanical stress, and have a life expectancy that is twice as long as CCFL. However, white LEDs have the same disadvantages as CCFLs in terms of color spectrum because white LEDs are equivalent to broadband sources. The white LED is formed by a blue-light diode that covers the phosphor, which converts part of the blue light into yellow light, and the combined spectrum is treated as white light.

Compared to monochromatic sources, RGB LEDs provide near-narrowband chromatography at a lower cost. RGB LEDs not only improve the chromatogram, but also increase efficiency because RGB LEDs emit light only in the red, green and blue light required. In contrast, broadband sources (such as white LEDs and CCFLs) emit more light that does not require color, reducing the purity of the chromatogram and thus losing efficiency. Since the RGB LEDs of different colors can be driven separately, the white point or color temperature of the RGB LED can be corrected, while the white spots of the CCFL and white LEDs are fixed.
