DOE Releases New York City Road Lighting GATEWAY Report

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has just released the final assessment report for a demonstration project of road lighting in New York City - GATEWAY report. The demonstration project is Franklin D, a busy elevated highway in New York City. Implemented on the Roosevelt Lane to compare the cost-effectiveness and energy-efficiency of LEDs with high-pressure sodium lamps. The LED lights used in the project were all from different manufacturers and were purchased in 2009. The assessment project was jointly implemented by the U.S. Energy Agency in conjunction with the New York City Department of Transportation and the Climate Group.

The main conclusions of the report are:

The energy saving effect of LED lamps is obvious. Compared with the existing high pressure sodium lamps, LED energy saving is 26%-57%.

Three sets of LED lamps reached the initial illuminance of the high-pressure sodium lamp, and the two sets only reached the minimum illuminance required by RP-8-00 (without considering the influence of dust).

The color rendering of all LED lamps is higher than that of high-pressure sodium lamps, and there is no upward light irradiation (compared with the original high-pressure sodium lamp).
