Fengyun No. 4 officially delivered to realize the overtaking of China's geostationary orbit meteorological satellite

The Fengyun-4 satellite represents a major leap forward in China's meteorological capabilities, significantly enhancing weather forecasting, disaster prevention, climate monitoring, environmental protection, and space weather early warning systems. Its advanced technology enables widespread application across various sectors, particularly supporting China's military-civilian integration strategy and playing a vital role in the implementation of the "Belt and Road Initiative." On September 25th, China successfully delivered its next-generation geostationary meteorological satellite, Fengyun-4, in Beijing. The satellite was officially handed over to the China Meteorological Administration by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, marking a key milestone in China's space program. The on-orbit delivery of Fengyun-4 marks a significant upgrade to China's geostationary meteorological satellite system. It ensures continuous, reliable, and stable operation of China's geostationary weather observation services, while also boosting the global standing and influence of China's space industry and meteorological sector. Fengyun-4 is the first satellite of the second generation of China's geostationary meteorological satellites, transitioning from the earlier Fengyun-2 series. Developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, it was launched successfully in December 2016. During its orbital operations, all test tasks—covering the satellite platform, payloads, and ground application systems—were completed successfully. The results confirmed that the satellite meets all engineering requirements in terms of functionality and performance. The development of Fengyun-4 has brought China’s geostationary meteorological satellite technology to an international advanced level, marking a shift from merely keeping up to leading in this field. The satellite fills three major international gaps and introduces several world-first technologies, including the first geostationary interferometric hyperspectral atmospheric detection system, the first radiometer and lightning imager, and the first microwave detection technology operating in the 425GHz band. These innovations allow for real-time and targeted monitoring of environmental issues such as extreme weather events, cyanobacterial blooms, and desertification.
