[Multiple pictures] foreign media exclaimed: This Chinese startup company's VR head is surprisingly advanced!

According to reports from foreign media, the Pimax 8K, a compact VR headset, has set a new standard with its ultra-high resolution and a 200° field of view, making other headsets seem outdated. During my visit to CEATEC, I had the chance to try out the Pimax 8K, and it truly impressed me. The headset offers an impressive 7680x2160 resolution, which, while not technically 8K (which is 7680x4320), is still one of the highest in the industry. Each eye gets a 4K resolution at 90Hz, which is remarkable for a consumer-grade VR headset. The company uses the term “8K” to highlight its high-end performance, but some have questioned whether this is misleading. Still, the specs are undeniably impressive for now. What stood out was the 200° field of view, nearly double that of most current headsets. This made the experience feel more immersive and natural. Unlike OLED screens used by competitors like HTC and Oculus, the Pimax 8K uses CLPL (Custom Low Latency LCD) panels, which promise reduced smearing and better brightness. While OLEDs may offer better contrast, CLPL allows for higher pixel density without a huge cost increase. During the demo, the headset was connected to an MSI laptop with an NVIDIA GTX 1080 GPU. Though it’s designed for 4K input, the signal is upconverted to "8K" internally, meaning even mid-range systems can power it. This makes it more accessible than many high-end VR headsets. The experience was nothing short of incredible. The lack of black borders and the sharp image quality made it feel like I was truly inside the virtual world. Compared to the StarVR, which also offers a wide field of view, the Pimax 8K felt lighter and more comfortable, despite its bulky appearance. Even though the laptop output was only 2560x1440, the display in the headset looked far superior to anything I've seen before. Head tracking and the controllers performed well, though long-term reliability remains to be seen. Pimax also announced the 8K X, a more powerful version aimed at hardcore gamers. It requires at least an NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti or Volta GPU and supports dual DisplayPort outputs for even better image quality. However, for most users, the regular 8K model should be more than sufficient. There's also the Pimax 5K, which uses two 2560x1440 CLPL panels—still significantly better than most current VR headsets. It's currently on Kickstarter, with a price of $349, and offers a great entry point into high-end VR without breaking the bank. Pimax is clearly aiming to disrupt the VR market with bold claims and innovative technology. Their roadmap includes expansion modules for features like inside-out tracking, eye tracking, wireless support, and even olfactory enhancements. It's an ambitious vision, and as a user, I’m excited to see what they bring next. This article was originally written by VR Net. Please credit VR Net and provide a link back.
