Broken energy-saving lamps are harmful to infants and pregnant women

Today, energy-saving lamps are increasingly replacing traditional incandescent lamps and becoming the most environmentally friendly lighting option. The EU is phasing out traditional incandescent lamps that have been used for more than 120 years and is obliging people to replace energy-saving lamps to achieve their energy-saving and emission-reduction targets. In the UK, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are the most common energy-saving lamps. However, a new German study warns that once the energy-saving lamps are broken, they emit enough mercury to endanger health, especially for infants and pregnant women. Traditional incandescent, diode and halogen bulbs do not cause mercury contamination when broken.

According to a new study by German Federal Environmental Agency researchers, the level of “mercury toxic fumes” produced by broken energy-saving lamps will exceed the safety guidelines for indoor mercury safety standards by more than 20 times. The director of the bureau, Jochen Frasbat, said that the presence of mercury is a major drawback to CFL energy-saving lamps, and therefore a new technology is needed to prevent mercury pollution as soon as possible. The advantage of 80% energy saving of CFL energy-saving lamps should be developed in parallel with its safety and non-crisis health. A spokesperson for the bureau said that children and pregnant women should stay away from broken CFL energy-saving lamps. For children and pregnant women, it is recommended to install a protective cover on the energy-saving lamp to prevent indoor mercury pollution caused by the bulb rupture.

However, the British government insists that the concern about the safety of CFL energy-saving lamps is purely worrying. Occasionally, the damage caused by the CFL bulbs is very small, so there is no need to make a fuss. A spokesman for the UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said that the mercury contained in CFL energy-saving light bulbs is not enough to endanger the health of the surrounding population.
