Ni-MH batteries will dominate the hybrid vehicle battery market in the next three years

On June 25, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced the "Administrative Rules for Access to New Energy Vehicle Manufacturing Enterprises and Products", which will be implemented on July 1. According to the new standard issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, hybrid passenger cars produced with nickel-metal hydride batteries are classified as mature products and are allowed to be sold and used nationwide, which is a great benefit to the nickel-metal hydride battery industry.

Ni-MH battery is currently the only battery system in the battery system used in hybrid vehicles that has been actually verified and commercialized and scaled up. All hybrid vehicles that have been mass-produced in the world use the Ni-MH battery system. The 99% market share of existing hybrid batteries is nickel-metal hydride batteries. At present, the hybrid brand cars are already in demonstration operation. They also use nickel-metal hydride batteries. However, the batteries are mainly purchased from abroad. The use of domestic nickel-metal hydride batteries in automobiles is still in the stage of research and development matching.

In the field of nickel-metal hydride batteries, China has advantages in technology and resources. Among them, nickel hydroxide has the world's leading performance, is rich in rare earth resources, and has unique resource advantages. Therefore, the development of nickel-hydrogen battery is the most realistic choice in China.

As the international oil price rose to $ 70, the advantages of new energy vehicles began to show. World crude oil supply is tight and prices continue to rise. At the same time, changes in the international energy environment have also created market conditions for the launch of hybrid vehicles.

In the development of new energy vehicles, the nickel-hydrogen battery technology is the most mature, and will remain the mainstream of new energy vehicles in the next three years. After that, the nickel-hydrogen battery technology will be three-thirds of the world with lithium iron phosphate and hydrogen fuel cells. Replaced by lithium batteries and fuel cells. Battery giants Panasonic and Sanyo also believe that lithium-ion power batteries cannot replace nickel-hydrogen power batteries within 2 to 3 years. The main reason is that nickel-hydrogen power batteries are cheap and safe and have reached large-scale production. Lithium batteries still need to continue to tackle key issues, such as safety, so commercialization will take time.

According to Japan ’s Fuji Economic Analysis, the mainstream status of nickel-metal hydride batteries will continue until 2011, but lithium batteries will gradually erode the market share of nickel-metal hydride batteries after 2011. Therefore, it is estimated that China's nickel-hydrogen battery will dominate the hybrid vehicle market in the next three years.
