2017 World Top 500: Huawei continues to rise for the first time this year

On July 20th, the Fortune Chinese website released the latest Fortune Global 500 list. For the first time, Huawei made it into the top 100, with operating revenue reaching $78.51 billion, ranking 83rd globally. This marks a significant milestone for the company, especially when compared to its position in 2014. In terms of Return on Equity (ROE), Huawei leads all Chinese companies in the list. Looking back at the past few years, Huawei's rise in the Fortune Global 500 has been remarkable. In 2011, it was placed at 352nd, which then improved to 315th in 2013. Over the last three years, it has consistently climbed the ladder. From 285th in 2014, it surged to 228th in 2015, further rising to 129th in 2016, and now reaching 83rd in 2017, a total improvement of 269 spots in just seven years. This makes Huawei the first Chinese tech company to break into the top 100. Among Chinese IT giants, Huawei is followed by JD.com at 261st, Alibaba at 462nd, and Tencent at 478th. The Fortune Global 500 list, known for its authority and reputation, ranks companies based on their operating income and profits, emphasizing company size and scale. It serves as a crucial benchmark for assessing global economic health and corporate competitiveness. In 2016, Huawei achieved impressive results, with a global sales revenue of 521.6 billion yuan. Its three main business divisions—carrier, enterprise, and consumer—each contributed significantly: - In the carrier business, Huawei capitalized on trends like cloud computing, video, IoT, and operational transformation, achieving revenue of 290.56 billion yuan, a 24% increase year-over-year. - In the enterprise segment, focusing on ICT infrastructure and digital transformation in sectors like public safety and finance, Huawei generated 40.67 billion yuan in revenue, a 47.3% increase. - In consumer electronics, Huawei’s smartphone sales reached 139 million units, with revenue of 179.81 billion yuan, marking a 43.6% year-on-year growth. According to IDC, Huawei's smartphones ranked third globally and first in China in Q1 2017, showcasing strong growth momentum amidst a sluggish market. Huawei’s P10 and Mate 9 models have also garnered significant user attention, with the P10 securing the top spot for nine consecutive weeks. Huawei’s commitment to innovation is evident in its partnerships with renowned brands like Leica and Porsche Design, enhancing its global brand presence. In the 2017 Forbes list of global brand values, Huawei was the sole Chinese company featured. Additionally, it ranked 49th in the BrandZ list of the world’s top 100 most valuable brands and 40th in the Brand Finance list of the world’s most valuable brands. Looking ahead, Huawei is poised to continue its upward trajectory, potentially entering the top ten within the next three to five years. With its leadership in 5G technology and its focus on both carrier and consumer businesses, Huawei is set to redefine the global tech landscape. As a symbol of China's technological resurgence, Huawei stands as a beacon for innovation and excellence.
