According to the China Semiconductor Industry Association, the revenue of the IC design industry in mainland China surged from 2.16 billion yuan in 2002 to 18.6 billion yuan in 2006, reflecting an average annual growth rate of 71.3%. By 2007, the top five companies by sales were China Huada IC, Shenzhen HiSilicon, Shanghai Spreadtrum Communications, Datang Microelectronics, and Zhuhai Actions IC. These leading players primarily focused on low-end segments such as smart cards, multimedia, and communication modules. However, during their first few years of operation, these companies experienced substantial growth in both scale and market share.
Despite their success in lower-tier markets, many of these firms are now gradually expanding into more advanced areas, aiming to compete globally. Their early growth was fueled by strong domestic demand and government support, which helped build a solid foundation for future innovation.
