FDD accelerates the change of domestic mobile phones, 90% of small and medium-sized brands die

After repeated bidding, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology finally announced the issuance of the FDD-LTE trial network license on the afternoon of June 27. Interestingly, the first confirmation message was issued by Wang Xiaochu, chairman of China Telecom, for nearly three hours. The urgency is evident.

Wang Xiaochu said at the China Telecom Tianyi Terminal Trade Fair held in Nanjing on the afternoon of June 27: "After two hours, there are major incidents to happen." "This spring is coming late, but the late spring will still bloom." Wang Xiaochu’s sudden appearance detonated the joy of the representative of the on-site industrial chain, and his speech was interrupted twice by applause. For all parties in the industry, the trial network license is issued, which means that China Telecom and China Unicom have finally decided to define the 4G strategy, and the “blind run” phase is over.

However, for the entire domestic terminal industry, the FDD trial network license will accelerate the rapid upgrade and reshuffle of the industry chain. The industry expects that more than 90% of domestic mobile phone brands will withdraw from the market in the next year and a half (before the end of 2015).

Before and after the telecom exhibition, the author communicated with dozens of operators, chips and terminal manufacturers and other industry insiders. The following is information dry goods finishing:

What changes have occurred in the three major operator terminal strategies?

China Mobile : China Mobile first identified its 4G terminal strategy. Although it repeatedly repeated on the three-mode/five-mode problem, it finally took care of the development of the three-mode 4G mobile phone. Under the general trend of clear terminal strategy and gradual cancellation of 3G subsidies, in the first six months of China Mobile (as of mid-June), 4G mobile phone shipments actually exceeded 20 million (omni-channel) and 4G users exceeded 10 million.

In terms of overall target, China Mobile plans to sell 190 million to 220 million TD mobile phones in 2014, of which TD-LTE handsets have a sales volume of 100 million units, and 4G shipments account for 50%. China Mobile currently has more than 190,000 terminal contracting channels. The target of the 2014 contracting channel has increased to more than 60% in 2014, and bare metal sales accounted for more than 50%.

China Telecom : With the issuance of the FDD trial network license, China Telecom finally clarified the 4G terminal strategy at the Tianyi terminal trade fair held on June 27. Wang Xiaochu said that China Telecom's target sales in 2014 were 62 million mobile phones, and 4G mobile phones accounted for about 36 million.

In addition, there are three aspects worthy of attention:

1. Channels. The proportion of social channels will reach 90%. This is the lowest year for operators to operate their own channels since the issuance of 3G licenses in 2008. Tianyi Terminal has only 7.45 million units. In other words, operators are affected by the “reform of the camp” tax policy, China Telecom will significantly reduce the subsidies to the terminal, and in turn increase the channel subsidies.

2, the price. China Telecom will focus on 3G below 700 yuan, and will increase its scale through customization and direct subsidy policies. It will be mainly 4G in the 700 yuan or more, and all models will be 4G mobile phones in the second half of the year. In addition to China Cool Alliance, it will increase support for second-tier backbone manufacturers such as TCL, and enrich the 4G product selection in the 599-990 price range.

3, three mode VS four mode. Most of China Telecom's customized 4G terminals are FDD/TDD/EVDO/GSM four-mode mobile phones, but there are also FDD/EVDO/GSM three-mode 4G mobile phones with an price of 2,499 yuan, such as OPPO R3. Wang Xiaochu, chairman of China Telecom, said in an exclusive interview with the author: "On the three-mode four-mode, it depends on the needs and choices of users." In other words, China Telecom has not given up its efforts in the single 4G (FDD) terminal, which will greatly enrich the degree of integration of telecom 4G terminals with international FDD.

China Unicom : China Unicom's attitude and measures in 4G are quite interesting. The tariff policy issued by China Telecom is not a 4G package, but a “3G/4G unified package”; user data is 3G/4G new users; 2014 is expected to have a terminal sales of 188 million units, of which LTE+42M (3G HSPA+) custom machine 1 Billion Taiwan. In other words, China Unicom does not have the same target of 4G users and terminals as China Mobile and China Telecom.

However, Lu Yimin, the general manager of China Unicom, said in an exclusive interview with the author in Shanghai in June this year: "China Unicom has clearly defined the 4G mobile phone subscription strategy, and FDD/TDD must support it." This means that China Unicom will abandon the most common single 4G (FDD) terminal in the world and choose a road that needs to be customized. However, with China Telecom's attempt to change the FDD terminal strategy, China Unicom's future 4G terminal subscription strategy may also change, which will have a profound impact on domestic terminal enterprises.
