NXP Announces Two Compact LED Drivers for Automotive LED Lighting

In 2008, the EU has announced that since February 2011, new cars and minivans are required to be equipped with daytime running lights (DRL). Other trucks and buses will be equipped on August 7, 2012. The EU will further accelerate this move. The growth of the car led market,. Audi's A8, R8 and A4 series are equipped with LED daytime running lights.

According to industry statistics, the service life of LEDs is 20 to 25 times that of conventional light sources and 10 times longer than halogen lamps. Compared with traditional light sources, the lumen output of the same power LED is 3 to 4 times higher than that of ordinary light bulbs and 2 to 3 times higher than that of halogen lamps. The use of LEDs also helps to improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions. In terms of daytime running lights, ordinary bulbs emit 1.2g of CO2 per kilometer and LEDs are reduced to 0.58g. LED has successfully entered the automotive market with long life and low power consumption. However, the use of LEDs for exterior lighting requires integrated, flexible and networked drives.

NXP's fully integrated highly flexible driver chips ASL1010NTK and ASL1010PHN for automotive LED lighting integrate many core functions. With this compact chip, an LED lighting control circuit can be constructed without an external MCU. In addition, during the current input conduction process, the ripple current is obviously reflected in the LED performance. Generally, the filter is used to avoid the influence of ripple current on the LED. This solution effectively eliminates the ripple current and avoids the use of an external filter. Reduce the external components required for the drive circuit.

The ASL1010NTK is an 8-pin version. The 3 x 3mm package size can be integrated with the LED on the same printed circuit board. For different automotive lighting applications, the number of LEDs used in the lighting module varies, and the drive circuit is different. NXP's system solution can support 1 to 20 LEDs in series with an output voltage range of 6V to 60V, which can support different automotive platforms, including hybrid vehicles.

The ASL1010PHN is a 16-pin version of the same series that includes a direct step-in resistor input and adds short-circuit protection to prevent damage to the LEDs such as wiring. There are also differences in the characteristics between different LED manufacturers and different LED batches, and the steep forward characteristics of the LEDs cause a slight fluctuation in the drive voltage to cause strong fluctuations in the drive current. LED manufacturers must divide different levels according to LED color and brightness. In the past, LED driver circuits were designed and optimized according to each level. NXP's ASL1010 PHN (16-pin version) can be used to distribute the grading resistors according to the characteristics of different LEDs to achieve the flexibility of the drive circuit, giving system manufacturers more freedom in designing and purchasing LED lights.

The ASL1010NTK and ASL1010PHN can also prevent LED overheating by temperature feedback and in combination with PWM to regulate the current flowing through the LED.

These two products are the first products introduced by NXP for automotive LED lighting drivers and officially put into production in 2011. In the future, NXP plans to integrate power switches for low-current drivers, integrated bus interfaces (CANLIN interfaces), and multi-channel drivers to drive the light groups to create the speed of light. NXP takes the integration of LED drivers to a new level - sensorless temperature sensing, when the LED driver chip will sense the temperature of the LED without the need for temperature feedback resistors.
