Broadcom's first HomePlug power line communication chip supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard

Powerline network is a technology that supports the transmission of data using wires. Broadcom today released two models that are said to be the industry's first HomePlug AV2 powerline SoC chips: BCM60500 and BCM60333. The data transmission rate can reach 1.5Gbps. This is three times faster than existing power line equipment.

HomePlug AV2 is a new-generation power line standard that uses extended frequency bands up to 86Mhz, breaking the previous HomePlug AV 30Mhz limitation. In addition, HomePlug AV2 supports MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), which is a technology already used in the 802.11n and 802.11ac Wi-Fi standards. In short, it can provide faster transmission speed and higher stability .

Broadcom said that the new BCM60500 and BCM60333 chip industries have built-in support for 802.11ac and 802.11n to provide a complete solution. The two chips are designed to be used in power line communication adapters, router devices, or can also be integrated into terminal devices such as set-top boxes, network streaming media devices, and so on.

Broadcom said that it has provided samples of BCM60500 and BCM60333 to network equipment suppliers. It is expected that these chips will be formally used by network equipment and reach consumers in the end of this year.
