Diodes Incorporated launched the single-phase brushless DC motor pre-driver ZXBM1021, which provides multi-functional and compact variable speed control for cooling fans, exhaust fans, extractors, motors and pumps in a variety of consumer and industrial products solution. This flexible pre-driver integrates common external components such as PWM signal integrators and MOSFET buffers, allowing designers to greatly simplify the system structure and reduce the number of components on the overall circuit board.

This pre-driver can directly control the motor speed by directly using external PWM signal, DC voltage signal or thermistor network input. It integrates Hall bias and amplifier circuits to ensure compatibility with various Hall effect sensors. The open collector frequency generator pin provides a speed output, which can monitor rotation and speed externally. In order to prevent the motor from stalling or the speed is lower than the minimum value when the control signal disappears, ZXBM1021 is available for users to set the minimum speed.

ZXBM1021 provides high-side and low-side drive output, plus 50mA source current and 100mA source / sink current capability, which can properly meet the needs of external H-bridge switches and motor power without additional buffering. A separate low-side drive power pin provides the ability to adjust the turn-on speed of the low-side MOSFET without affecting the turn-off speed, which helps reduce electromagnetic interference noise and shoot-through.

This pre-driver has an operating voltage range of 6.8V to 18V and can directly support 12V motors, as well as 24V and 48V motors through external voltage regulators. This device has a programmable overcurrent limit function, which effectively detects the rotor stall status, avoids overheating or burning of the H-bridge and motor windings, and performs a soft start after the rotor is unlocked to minimize the inrush current of the motor.

The ZXBM1021 uses a small footprint and heat-strengthened ultra-thin U-QFN4040-20 chip package, plus a wide working range from -40oC to + 110oC, which is ideal for applications that are space constrained and have high thermal requirements.
