Eero Acquires Thing, a Smart Home Start-up: Creating a Complete Solution for Managing Internet of Things at Home

Eero, a leading company in smart home network communication routers, is striving to offer users simpler solutions for managing their growing array of connected devices. Recently, the company made a strategic move by acquiring Thington, a smart home management application along with its development team. Thington, established in 2015 by Matt Biddulph, the founder of Dopplr, and Tom Coates, who previously served as the product director at Yahoo Brickhouse, quickly caught the attention of notable angel investors such as Ray Ozzie, Stewart Butterfield, Eric Wahlforss, Joi Ito, Marko Ahtisaari, Saul Klein, Loic Le Meur, Matt Rolandson, and Samantha Tripodi. Although the exact amount of funding remains undisclosed, it's clear that Thington aimed to develop innovative ways to help users navigate the increasing complexity of managing multiple home networking devices. Last year, Coates and Biddulph introduced Thington Concierge, an AI-powered home management app centered around chatbots. This application allowed users to effortlessly control a variety of IoT devices, including Philips Hue lights, Nest smart thermostats, smoke alarms, and more. However, earlier this week, Thington informed its users that the application would cease operations on August 21. Despite this, the team remains optimistic, as they will continue their mission under the umbrella of Eero. This acquisition not only strengthens Eero’s position in the smart home market but also brings aboard two exceptionally talented product specialists. Solving the challenges of seamless device integration is at the heart of what Eero does, and the addition of Coates and Biddulph aligns perfectly with their goals. Eero CEO Nick Weaver emphasized the importance of creating a robust home operating system, stating, “As everything in the home becomes connected, users need an operating system to manage it all.” With Eero routers already acting as gateways to the internet for countless devices, the company sees a unique opportunity to design comprehensive management solutions tailored specifically for smart homes. The future looks promising for Eero as it continues to innovate and expand its offerings. As the smart home ecosystem evolves, so too will the tools and services that Eero provides to ensure a seamless user experience.
