ROHM, a leading semiconductor manufacturer, has introduced a groundbreaking automotive grounded operational amplifier designed to deliver exceptional EMI tolerance, significantly reducing the need for noise immunity design. This new series, known as the **BA8290xYxx-C**, includes models such as BA82904YF-C, BA82904YFVM-C, BA82902YF-C, and BA82902YFV-C. These amplifiers are specifically developed for critical systems in EVs, HEVs, and other automotive electronics that rely on on-board sensors.
The BA8290xYxx-C series combines ROHM’s advanced circuit design, layout expertise, and proprietary bipolar process technology. Unlike conventional operational amplifiers, which may experience output voltage variations of up to ±10% across different frequencies, this series maintains a variation of just ±1%. This remarkable performance ensures that signals from downstream components, such as sensors, remain unaffected by noise. As a result, the need for external filters and noise suppression circuits is eliminated, simplifying system design and enhancing reliability.
Launched in September 2017 with a sample price of 500 yen per unit (excluding tax), the product was planned for mass production starting in June 2018, with a monthly capacity of 1 million units. The initial manufacturing was handled by ROHM Wako Co., Ltd. in Okayama, Japan, while later production moved to ROHM Integrated Systems in Thailand.
In recent years, automotive electronics have become increasingly complex, relying heavily on ECUs and sensors to manage various functions like temperature, acceleration, and current. However, as vehicles become more electronic, noise interference has become a growing concern—especially for sensors handling small signals. Traditionally, noise issues were only identified after full system assembly, often requiring costly redesigns. ROHM's new amplifier addresses this challenge head-on, offering a solution that eliminates the need for additional noise mitigation steps during development.
This innovation marks the world’s first automotive operational amplifier that does not require anti-noise design circuits. By integrating advanced simulation technologies in circuit design, layout, and process, the BA8290xYxx-C series sets a new benchmark in noise immunity. It also reduces power consumption to 0.5mA (compared to 0.7mA for standard products) and features a lower bias voltage of ±6mV (vs. ±7mV in general products). The product lineup supports AEC-Q100 standards, uses standard op-amp pin configurations, and offers common surface-mount packages, making it easy to replace existing noisy components.
The BA8290xYxx-C series is ideal for applications such as EV/HEV inverters, engine control units, automatic transmissions, electric power steering, headlights, air conditioning systems, combination switches, EV chargers, and car navigation systems. Any automotive electronic system that requires precise signal handling can benefit from this technology.
Looking ahead, ROHM plans to expand the use of its noise-immune operational amplifier technology into the industrial equipment market, further demonstrating its commitment to innovation and reliability.
