ROHM, a leading semiconductor manufacturer, has introduced the BA8290xYxx-C series of automotive grounded operational amplifiers with exceptional EMI tolerance. These advanced amplifiers are specifically designed for core systems in EVs and HEVs, such as engine control units, sensors, and automotive electronics. The new series—BA82904YF-C, BA82904YFVM-C, BA82902YF-C, and BA82902YFV-C—offer groundbreaking anti-noise performance, eliminating the need for additional noise filtering components.
The BA8290xYxx-C series integrates ROHM’s expertise in circuit design, layout optimization, and proprietary bipolar process technology. This combination results in an output voltage variation of just ±1% across all frequency bands, significantly outperforming conventional products that typically vary between ±3.5% to ±10%. As a result, these amplifiers ensure stable signal amplification without interference from noise, reducing the need for complex noise suppression circuits. This innovation not only simplifies system design but also enhances reliability and reduces development time.
Launched in September 2017, the BA8290xYxx-C series was available for sampling at a price of 500 yen per unit (excluding tax). Mass production began in June 2018, with a monthly capacity of 1 million units. The initial manufacturing was handled by ROHM Wako Co., Ltd. in Okayama, Japan, while the later production stages were managed by ROHM Integrated Systems in Thailand.
In recent years, automotive electronic systems have increasingly relied on ECUs and sensors to monitor and optimize critical parameters like temperature, acceleration, and current, improving fuel efficiency and safety. However, as vehicles become more electronically complex, noise interference has become a growing challenge, especially for sensors handling small signals. Traditional approaches often required extensive noise testing after full assembly, which could lead to costly design changes if issues were discovered late in the development cycle.
ROHM addressed this challenge by leveraging its analog design capabilities and unique bipolar process technology. The BA8290xYxx-C series is the world's first operational amplifier that doesn't require external noise immunity circuits, marking a significant breakthrough in automotive electronics.
Key features include:
1. **World's First Automotive Op-Amp Without Noise Design**
The BA8290xYxx-C series combines advanced circuit design, layout experience, and a proprietary bipolar process to achieve superior noise immunity. With only ±1% output voltage variation, it eliminates the need for three CR filters typically used in general op-amps. This makes it ideal for sensor-based applications where noise can cause signal distortion.
2. **Support for Global Automotive Standards**
The series meets the AEC-Q100 reliability standard and offers lower power consumption (0.5mA vs. 0.7mA in typical products) and a reduced bias voltage (±6mV vs. ±7mV). It uses standard pin configurations and surface-mount packages, making it easy to replace existing noisy components in automotive systems.
The BA8290xYxx-C series is suitable for a wide range of automotive applications, including EV/HEV inverters, engine control units, automatic transmissions, electric power steering, headlights, air conditioning systems, combination switches, EV chargers, and car navigation systems. It is particularly well-suited for any system requiring high noise immunity and reliable signal processing.
Looking ahead, ROHM plans to expand this advanced noise-immune op-amp technology into the industrial equipment market, further broadening its impact beyond automotive applications.
